Walz Tetrick Advertising was honored as a 2016 OBIE Award Finalist by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) for its Kansas City Royals billboard “Burning Up the Bases.”

Now in its 74th year, the OBIE Awards program is the oldest and one of the most prestigious shows in advertising, awarding creative excellence in the out of home (OOH) medium. The 108 international campaigns nominated this year demonstrate the myriad ways simplicity can be captured and expressed through the OOH medium.

Walz Tetrick created the award-winning billboard to launch the Kansas City Royals’ 2015 advertising campaign to KC area commuters. Since base stealing is such an important part of the club’s game plan, the board featured the fleet feet of outfielder Jarrod Dyson as he burned the base path – and the billboard itself – on his way to second base. Featuring charred plywood and glowing embers, the billboard pushes the boundaries of billboard techniques and teed up a season that ended with a World Series win.

“When designing for OOH, it has to be beautiful, it has to be smart, and it has to be relevant ,” said Jim Copacino, Copancino + Fujikado, one of this year’s OBIE judges. “And if you can do all that, you win an OBIE.”

The 2016 winners were announced at the OBIE Awards Gala on Tuesday, April 19. See a full list of the winning work here.
